By default, ATA disks are assigned numbers based on the ATA controller they are on, and whether they are primary or secondary on the controller. For example, the primary disk on the first controller would be ad0, the secondary disk on the first controller would be ad1, the primary disk on the second controller would be ad2, etc. This is the ATA_STATIC_ID kernel option. I expect that there are two ATA controllers before the one your disk is on. You may confirm this by running "atacontrol list".
