If you haven't already, try upgrading the xf86-video-intel port to the latest version (I think 2.7.1). This seems to solve many problems with video playback.
If you crash like this image shows, switch to the x11 driver for video playback, and avoid xv. (mplayer -ao x11) I have the same issue, lockup, crashes with xv, and appears still not to be fixed with the latest Intel drivers in ports :(
