we need more information to figure out what your problem is, I and many others have built or upgraded KDE many many times and have working versions of KDE. portupgrade works like a charm for me, either when using it to build from ports (source), or setting the PACKAGESITE environment variable to point to the KDE package site at fruitsalad.org (check http://rabarber.fruitsalad.org/ for fully qualified path) and specify the -P option to install binary package.
