This surprises me a bit, as I'd understood that the differences between 1.5 and 1.6 were strictly limited to bugfixes, and changed the interface not at all. Reason that this might make some difference to you is that, at least for me (using FreeBSD-current) the jdk16 port and eclipse, from ports, are absolutely rock stable.
