I went by wikipedia to double-check. I'm right about the original name. At some point after twm was included in the X11 core distribution, later developers decided to rename it to "Tab Window Manager" because they'd changed so much code. (If they'd done it with Tom's OK, then I don't have any concern; if they'd just renamed it themselves without discussion with the original author, well, I'd find that a bit tacky.) I remember switching from uwm? to twm around 1990 and finding the later vastly more tolerable. But I also largely switched from X11 to Display Postscript on NEXTSTEP or Sun's OpenWin (X11+Motif+DPS extension, IIRC) around then.
