I'm not 100% sure, but I believe I heard whispers of support in 9.x...
I think you won't get much for 8.1 specifically, as 8.2 was the latest 8.x; that said you could try compiling it for your own purposes (if there is any support), or helping backport to 8-STABLE and go from there.
