-I is supposed to do that, but if it doesn't work right, consider gaining a bit more debugging info (a backtrace from running under gdb or against the corefile) and filing a PR. You could also discuss this with "upstream", meaning the NTP mailing list at <questi...@lists.ntp.org>....
