Linux generally uses DEL (127) and (almost) everyone else uses BS (8). Adding to the confusion, most keyboards label it "Backspace". Most (but not all) applications on a given host are consistent with the choice (or accept either code). There are exceptions, of course. With xterm, you can use control/Backspace to toggle between the two (for one keypress), or use the control/left-mouse menu to toggle the "Backarrow Key (BS/DEL)" entry. -- Thomas E.
