Please show your ~/.xinitrc and ~/.xserverrc; mine look like this:
$ cat .xinitrc
setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp
exec startkde
$ cat .xserverrc
exec X -nolisten tcp -retro
and X comes down fine when KDE ends.
