Using the GUI gsmartcontrol shows two disks but it's the same disk shown as ada0 and as ad18.

I use the following string in /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf

/dev/ada0 -a -o on -S on -s (S/../.././11|L/../../6/15) -m name@mail.server


Is this normal behaviour?

Yes.  It's a backwards-compatibility thing.
