Hm. I have just never seen sendmail open /etc/hosts on my system. After ktracing it I see that it does.
I'm not sure that "sendmail predates DNS" would be quite the right way to put it. Regardless, sendmail certainly predates the canonical usage of email addresses identifying the destination via Internet-based DNS records. :-)
