Are you trying to install a software package with a name like 
foobar.tgz? You have to use the pkg_add tool.

If you just want to unzip it, then tar xzvf $archive will do, or tar 
xjvf $archive if it's compressed with bzip2 (*.tar.bz2) instead of 
gzip (*.tar.gz)
