According to /usr/src/UPDATING, you can set it from the loader. Put it in loader.conf(5).
Well this helps a bit ...:)
But the problem I had was that when I added it to sysctl.conf
I added the 'word' sysctl infront of the command....not just the command itself...
Stupid mistake. After fixing that...SMP is working nicely on this machine.
