If your using Telnet the term variable is automatically set. If you want to change it you need to fix your telnet program.
If your connecting ASCII terminals via serial cable this is already covered in the instructions for setting up a serial terminal. If you have a broken Telnet program you will have to set the term variable manually during the user's login script.
