Dru Lavigne's book "BSD Hacks" has a hack called "Build a Port Without the Ports Tree" which might be useful to you... and -- lucky you -- it's one of the sample hacks on O'Reilly's site:

I tried it.  The system generates so many SCSI errors that it panics
before the entire tree is installed.
