I'm not sure if it was something that I did in particular, but did notice that portupgrade stopped working for me, saying that ruby env was unknown per:
http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=19874 I found that in /usr/local/bin there was no ruby symlink to ruby18, so that was my fix.
