I've used them for a long time in servers, but now they average around $3 in quantity on eBay and I use them in everything. Also, many off-lease PC's come with it on the motherboard. For GigE, I prefer (also) Intel Etherexpress --- but the driver is "em" (I have not tried "igb). I also have had no complaints with "bge" and "bce" driver chipsets on equipped motherboards. In both cases, I make heavy use of vlans and hardware vlan tagging.
