It is very likely that you can do without kernel recompilation. Unless you downgrade from amd64 family processor to i386 (from 64 to 32 bits) or what is very hard to do, you e.g. change to powerpc from Intel (but you have to change more than processor in that case) your kernel won't need any changes. You can make some tweaks in you config of course and than recompile the kernel.
