Try Knoppix, or Ubuntu LiveCD. I tend to use the former for rescue situations: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD Saves you from having to install anything as well. Don't expect good X performance, but even if it's software-driven that's still a good stress test for the CPU. > Thanks for all the tips. I'll be very surprised if Dell is of any assistance, as the last I checked they did not officially "support" FreeBSD (that's usually their statement). I think testing Linux and/or Windows will overall act as a better confirmation.
