I do generally agree with this point, but it's not "every contrib part". Many contrib additions can be useful to a majority, and not rotting software. I agree with this point too, however I, like others have voiced, feel strongly that diagnostic [client] tools like host and/or dig are not at all "high-level software" and _need_ to be present in a base system.
