We use Azure extensivley with FreeBSD, and I havent installed from an image since the first one. Everything I do is taking a copy of an existing bootable machine and cloning the disc, or using 'zfs send' to send it to another place and dump onto a disc there ((OK, for that I spin up a temprary machine from the marketplace to attach the drive to I guess). Works great. You;ll need to install waaagent, but apart from that then just moving the machine will work fine.
