I used src/UPDATING (near the end, under "COMMON ITEMS", then "To rebuild everything and install it on the current system.") to inform me as to the proper sequence. It cites the use of "mergemaster -Fp"; accordingly, for my (daily) tracking of stable/12 (and head), I (now) invoke "etcupdate -p" before "make installworld" and "etcupdate" (without "-p" after "make installworld".
