While this isn't related to the OP's question, it might be helpful to him. I find portmanager to be vastly superior to portupgrade. In one fell swoop you can update any new ports + rebuild all dependencies. It works well. Combine it with portsnap and life is good! =) It doesn't have a ruby dependency either. Give it a whirl.
