These settings work fine on my system:
# splash screen settings
splash_bmp_load="YES"
bitmap_load="YES"
bitmap_name="/boot/splash.bmp"
Note that you can only use 256 colour Bitmap images.
and size should be 320x200
Last time I used one anyway.
