Correct, and thanks, this fixed it. Safe mode was not enough to boot up without the module, so I was very uncertain as to how I could recompile the culprit. Then I found the boot console where I could type in something along the lines of "disable-module nvidia" and then "boot-conf", which in turn continued booting the box without loading the "old" nvidia.ko-module. Reinstall of x11/nvidia-driver and a new reboot was what I needed to get back on track.
