Please don't top post! I don't think you need VESA for any of these...certainly not the SC_HISTORY_SIZE. You do need it for SC_PIXEL_MODE to get more modes on systems that lack that capability (like my T43 laptop). If you can set it to a mode that makes you happy, those commands should work, but some systems offer very few modes without VESA.
