I looked through my xorg.conf and it looked fairly similar. I do not have

Identifier "xrandr"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0

I don't have DRI enabled.

I have moved this discussion over to the freebsd-x11 list in the hope someone there might be able to figure this out.

I guess for now, I have to be happy that xrandr control makes life with the mga device semi-tolerable.
