Please ensure the SATA1 limiting jumper has been removed on all of these
drives. Maxtor (now Seagate) often leaves this jumper enabled by
default, due to SATA chipset bugs/incompatibilities. See Section 3.2 in

Thanks for the info. The jumper may well be in place.
Still it doesn't solve the main issue, that is the controler isn't
properly recognised.
