Just a follow up, here is the backtrace from GDB

Thanks for the core. Appended is a backtrace with symbols. The source may not be an exact match but it's close enough to show the issue is in zfs.

 Just to check: are you booting a Debian VM with a ZFS filesystem ?

The version of ZFS in grub2-bhyve doesn't work with FreeBSD (the supported pool version is too old) so it's never had much of a workout. I'm looking at backporting some of the more recent grub ZFS code but it's going to take a while.
