Valeu pelas respostas rápidas galera. Eu deveria ter lido o UPDATING realmente, mas com nunca tive tal problema, acabei tomando o mau hábito de simplesmente atualizar.
quanto a parte do portupgrade -rf libxcb eu sempre uso portupgrade -rRa que segundo a doc, deveria ter checado as dependências também. "The -R will check the build dependencies and the -r will check the applications that depend upon the port being upgraded.
