Hello fellow FreeCarders,
It's been eons since I have read any mail from our
group, and some new development have arisen, so I
suddenly got the urge to contact y'all.
The News-Flash is that Kevin Calhoun has left Apple.
It may be that he made a stand for HyperCard and it
didn't work out. Either way, the departure of Kevin
from Apple is a sure-sign that Apple has killed
HyperCard, given that he was one of the principal
engineers of HyperCard.
More relevant still is that Kevin has launched his own
business and has offered to help figure out
HyperCard's source code if and when we can wrench this
source away from Apple's clutches. I vote that we ask
Kevin Calhoun to be the lead engineer of our FreeCard
project. It would be awesome, wouldn't it ? :)
But, before we do that, I would like to know where we
stand right now. Are we still working on the
interpreter pioneered by Anthony DeRobertis? Has there
been some further developments with Uli's
Block-File-Format? What about the Text-Editor? And,
switching gears a little bit, what about the FreeCard
website? Adrian, have you transferred the site to the
person(s) who requested it?
As for myself, I have a 80% functional GUI for
FreeCard, where each dialog/window/palette is an
editable MetaCard stack, and the whole
looks/feels/operates substantively like HC as we know
it. The remaining 20% deals with the dialogs where
resources are edited, thumbnails of the RecentCard
feature, e.g. features that aren't used on a daily
basis by most HC users. The mod 20% also includes some
integration issues. But basically, especially if we
make some compromises on some non-essential features,
it could released in a week. We could design
alternatives for these non-essential features that
would be simpler to implement and might even improve
upon those existing dialogs. This will require a
bitmore time and it leads us into the
new-features-requests stage of the FreeCard project
which we agreed to hold off for a while, until the
initial 'clone' is completed. We are thus at a pivotal
moment in terms of the GUI of FreeCard.
