Hello Stewart, > I'm thinking about doing an "Intro to Java" > course at uni ...
Good plan, Stew. I wish I had time to do this as well. A friend of mine has been pestering to enroll in some Java courses, but I just don't have the time anymore for such assiduous learning. I have been working another, equally crucial, angle of the FreeCard project : I am attempting to get funding for our project from an increasing number of institutions that are increasingly *counting* on open source. So far, my 'accomplishments' in this regard are very modest, but I'm already looking for one young xCard developer for FreeGUI, and one young Java programmer to help us with FreeCard. They have to be young, and from Quebec (Canada), in order to qualify for the funding of their work, because that's what the current funding src stipulates. We expect this to soften in our next round of financing, e.g. open to older developers that don't necessarily live in Quebec. > which is odd, since I'm studying marine biology! Not so odd. Computer skills are trans-disciplinary. > After I become somewhat proficient, > I figure I can Help The Cause. And w-e-l-c-o-m-e you will be! :)) > What do people here use to write Java in? > Can I use Xcode? Anything else out there > that's better? I don't know much about Java, I am sure that you can use any editor that you are comfortable with. If youre using Macintosh, you might want to consider BBEdit. Once you get into it, though, you'll probably become comfortable with lots of tools that you do not even know 'exists' at this time. There are HUGE integrated development systems out there for Java development, and your uni course will turn you on to some "Frameworks". Nobody codes entirely from scratch anymore! (or so I am told). > Thanks! > Stewart Thank y-o-u, Stewart, for considering our noble cause as worthy of your attention and concern. We need as many ardent souls as we can muster in our struggle for more freedom, 'wrested' from those forces who would attempt to deprive us of it. F-r-e-e-d-o-m ! ;-) Militantly yours, Alain __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
