Hi,
I've noticed that nothing has happened here for quite a while. So, I thought I'd make a proposal to those here who can program in Java:
It just so happens that I have the beginnings of an xTalk parser written in Java. It started out as a toy project and now it's progressed a lot. It only parses and optimizes (eliminates constant expressions) right now. It doesn't generate any code, it doesn't do any built-in commands or variables yet, but it should be fairly easy to make it do that once the code has been parsed.
The intermediate goal is to have it generate Java source code. Java Bytecode is very complex, and until we'd acquire the knowledge to generate bytecode, this translator would let us use javac to generate bytecode from the source. That'd be slower, but at least we'd have something that works.
Now, here's the catch:
I've written an xTalk interpreter before for this project, got it pretty much finished just to find out nobody wanted it. I'm not going to do that again. I'm not going to release this source code just to keep working on it alone. If I'm doing all the work, I want to reap the benefits alone.
So, if you're willing to dedicate your time and Java programming skills to this endeavor, you'll have to prove it to me. Get in touch with me, and I'll send you the sources, and I'll expect you to add something noticeable to it. The sources will remain owned and copyrighted by me, and I'll get the right to use any changes you make.
If you add significant and well-written contributions, you'll have convinced me, and I'll GPL the code for use in FreeCard, and we'll all collaborate on this thing together.
If you just fix two bugs and that's it, you'll get a "thanks to" in the about screen and that'll be it. I'll keep my parser and work on it alone. And it probably won't be an xTalk.
This is just an offer. If you don't think it's fair, don't take me up on it. -- Cheers, Uli Kusterer ------------------------------------------------------------ On the subject of C program indentation: "In My Egotistical Opinion, most people's C programs should be indented six feet downward and covered with dirt." -- Blair P.
