At me too this problem -
OS: Linux (2.6.22-ARCH)
Gtk2: 2.10.14
Freeciv: 2.1.0-beta6
Pango: 1.18.1

Steps to reproduce:
  1. start a new local game
  2. build a new city

Log:
(civclient:10350): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to
pango_layout_set_text()
[1]    10350 segmentation fault  civclient
