Details:

Like the summary says; it appears the freeciv interface makes the classic
interface mistake of changing a background colour and assuming people don't
use non-default foreground colours. I happen to use a grey-on-black desktop
scheme, and consequently the text in the main menu is shown as
grey-on-yellow, which is totally unreadable, as shown in the attached
screenshot.
