Follow-up Comment #3, bug #16974 (project freeciv):
If the file has been created, that means that the game has been saved in the
section file but it stopped when writing the gz file. If the OS crashed, it
probably sent the SIGTERM signal to the server, what caused the server to
save the game, and later the SIGKILL signal, what caused the file to be
incomplete...
It is not sure this is a Freeciv problem. It might be due to ubuntu 10.10
(invalid package or hardware bug)...
