Follow-up Comment #1, bug #17883 (project freeciv):

To be fair, the INSTALL document does say:

"You can check if you have GNU make installed on your system by
typing:

 % make -v                   [and if this doesn't work, try "gmake -v"]

The output should include "GNU Make" somewhere."

But yeah, it would be better if the message were more descriptive.  Why
doesn't it just say to use gmake in the first place?
