Follow-up Comment #5:
the attached patch on top of file #14159 fixes the problems with the
debugging settings:
--enable-debug=yes: as much checks as possible
--enable-debug=checks: adds -Wstrict-prototypes (problematic for gtk2)

I will commit both patches if there are no comments.
