Follow-up Comment #1, bug #14529 (project freeciv):

Is this the appropriate ticket for the case where any attempt to "Connect to
network game" when the metaserver is down in some way causes the client to
hang, even if the user doesn't switch to the metaserver page and isn't trying
to connect over the Internet? (For the Gtk client at least.)

I think this was particularly bad in the recent outage, because the specific
failure was that resolved to an IP address that was not
responding (due to the only remaining nameserver having old records), so the
"hang" was presumably a single-threaded attempt to connect to that IP timing
out. More common failures would be failure to resolve (should
be quick failure) and network unreachable (again, should be quick).
