Follow-up Comment #1:
I think that gtk3-client development has made this approach to zooming
functionality undesired. I actually had almost-working quite a different
zooming patch (which I maybe some day am able to salvage from the harddisk of
the failed computer)
Keeping this ticket open just in case, until better alternative really exist.
