Follow-up Comment #1:
There was an gtk-assert failing about gdk_window_process_updates() being fed
non-window parameter when reproducing this. Fix for that was easy (don't try
to refresh mapview when there's not one) and it seems it was somehow causing
this problem too (not really surprising as there is clear link in that it was
mapview display expanding that caused message area shrinkage)
