It sounds good to me.
However, I have only used git once, and I remember it was not possible to
checkout one folder of the repository alone. You needed to create a local copy
of the whole repo in order to submit changes to one single file. If this is
the case, I'm not sure if git will be the best for modpacks that will be
independent from each other.
Anyway, if you publish a repository, I'll use it for my earth scenario.
