Details:
Even gnome/gtk now recommends using pkg-config (directly) instead of the gtk's
own macros. Latest versions of the macros have been marked deprecated.
Replace AM_PATH_GTK_3_0 calls with PKG_CHECK_MODULES in our configure code.
That gives us even mechanism to distinguish between gtk2 and gtk3 that we used
to implement as a modification to the gtk macros ourselves. Remove thus unused
gtk-3.0.m4.
In addition to applying the patch, the file m4/gtk-3.0.m4 should be really
removed.
