Follow-up Comment #7:
Further improvement for this would be to have a separate mechanism that can
first check the legality of "-Werror" itself. That would be needed if a
compiler by default considers unknown commandline parameters errors (so we
don't need -Werror for that) and "-Werror" itself is one of those unknown
parameters.
