A few preliminary findings:

Colonization maps have a size of 58 x 72 tiles, and the map files have a 
size of 12534 bytes. The files start with a six-byte header. Byte 0 is 
the map width, byte 2 is the map height. The maps seem to contain three 
map layers. The first layer records the tile types. The original map 
editor does not allow you to edit rows 0 or 71, nor columns 0 or 57. All 
tiles in these lines and columns are replaced with the default tile type 
(ocean, decimal 25). Ice seems to be encoded as decimal 24.
