First some history.

Freenode started in 1995 for the benefit of the hacker, free software and open 
source communities that were just taking off.

In february 2021, there was corporate style take-over attempted.

Since most mods and admins are volunteers, the entire team resigned in protest.

They went ahead and created 'Libera Chat'

Almost all the major communities moved to libera.chat and lots of new IRC 
channels got created.
