NOTE
This is an early draft of the Software Freedom License.
Thanks Saifi for sharing the draft.
Two points:
1. Silly question -> When we write a license or form a license for FLOSS
software do we need to have some governing body to approve it or make it
official?
Absolutely not !
Though out of courtesy, people reach out to a bunch of blokes at OSI located
somewhere north of sovereign Mexico and south of Sovereign Canada!
In a world of 8+ billion people, i'd any day prefer the "value alignment" of
contributor(s) and user(s) who appreciate and take great pride in the values of justice
and equality that we as a project PRACTICE (and not just espouse).
2. We should we have a discussion on this, I will schedule something for
tomorrow
The current SFL draft is available to all community members.
Certainly, we should discuss the following
- Equality and Justice as two non-negotiables of Software Freedom project (SFP)
- Contract law and Copyright law as two pillars of Software Freedom license
(SFL)
- Clarification of legal clauses, 1, 2, 3 and 4 and their implications
- co-opting and subsuming ASL2, MIT, X and other artistic and poetic licenses
- fresh implementation instead of using code licensed under misc EPL, MPL, CDDL
- Possible need to introduce an exception for code licensed under (GPLv2,
GPLv3, AGPLv3) to cohabit with SFL in a combined work.
As you can see there is some ground to cover. Suggest a session of 90 minutes.
warm regards
Saifi.
