Canonical URLs are preferable, but involve additional overhead.

Hmm - I don't really care what scripts you would want others to write for you, or what tasks your empleyer pays you for doing yourself.

I do care what central tracking mechanisms you apply to this mailinglist which quite explicitly is about avoiding such mechanisms.
