SMTP is just a protocol for doing that in a reliable way (gracefully
handling errors etc.). Re-inventing SMTP would probably be
counterproductive. :-)

But you are right that if FreedomBoxes can communicate directly, they could
be configured to send each other mail directly as well, thus bypassing some
of the ISP limitations.
