I would imagine that an unplugged plug computer wouldn't present much of a problem, especially if the network includes store and forward technology that would guarantee information would get through even with 'sometimes on' connectivity of the individual nodes. My company dealt with this type of issue when we were deploying a system in Zimbabwe that was linked by connections that were often down or the equipment had been stolen and, thus, couldn't transmit data to its peers. We used the basic concept of a hearbeat, like Matt wrote about, to be able to determine when it was feasible to transmit data and when it wasn't. It actually wasn't too difficult and worked out remarkably well. Also, having your data securely stored on multiple peers would provide the redundancy you need in the event of a catastrophic data or plug loss, and the plug computers could be configured so that, after entering some basic information into a new plug, it queries your peers to retrieve your data and restore itself to a pre-crash state.
